There are many things that could constitute a masterpiece. For Keifer and Shawna Thompson of Thompson Square, a few examples include William Shakespeare’s works and the Eiffel Tower. And in their new song, called “Masterpiece,” they are comparing those objects of beauty to something a bit more precious to them — their three-year-old son, Cooper.

The tune is the husband and wife duo’s first single to be released to radio in more than three years, and it serves as the title track of their third album, which was released independently in June 2018. Kiefer, the sole songwriter of the song, says the idea came to him in the early morning hours, and he realized the word ‘masterpiece’ could only be attributed to their son.

“I woke up one morning really early with that title in my head,” Keifer says in an interview with Sounds Like Nashville. “I couldn’t go back to sleep after I wrote it down, and I just kept thinking about it, so I finally forced myself out of bed at about 5:30 in the morning and started writing it. I was trying to find what ‘masterpiece’ meant to me. I came up with the best thing that I did in my life, or had done in my life to that point that I’ll never be able to out-do, and that was easily my son.”

Once he started writing, Keifer says the song came out easily. He then played it for his wife and duo partner, Shawna, who was floored. That’s when the duo decided to go back into the studio to cut the song and make it the title track of the album.

“Honestly, anytime he comes to me and he says, ‘Oh, I’ve got a new song I want to play for you,’ I kind of dread it,” Shawna says. “I want to be honest. I don’t want to give him some answer that he wants to hear. . . .That particular morning, I was just shocked. I thought it was that great.”

The duo also released a music video for the song featuring real-life, home video footage from Keifer’s upbringing, which was juxtaposed with recent footage of Keifer, Shawna and Cooper.

Shawna and Keifer say having a new single out after three years makes them “feel like kids again,” and they’ll be singing the new tune on tour this year. Fans can catch Thompson Square on tour in the US for the rest of the summer, followed by their first European/UK trek, kicking off Sept. 2 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
