Today (March 15) marks the 10th anniversary of one of many milestones in Carrie Underwood’s career: the day she was invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry. During a Saturday night performance on the genre’s hallowed stage, Underwood was wrapping her song “All American Girl,” when Randy Travis snuck behind her to ask an important question.
“I thought you guys were standing up for me,” Underwood exclaimed, regarding the cheering audience.
Travis took the mic and asked the anxious American Idol alum a career-changing question.
“I was asked by the management here at the Grand Ole Opry to ask you if you would like to be their next member,” the country legend asked Underwood.
A look of pure joy swept across Underwood’s face as she pretended to have to think about the answer. Without a doubt, she answered with a joyous yes, tears started flowing and all of country music celebrated for the deserving artist.
“That was so amazing,” the Oklahoma native said in a backstage interview following the invitation. “I couldn’t have imagined it from a different person.”
Garth Brooks inducted Underwood into Grand Ole Opry membership on May 10, 2008.
