It was love at first sight for Tim McGraw, but not so much for Faith Hill.

It was love at first sight, at least for Tim McGraw, when he laid eyes on Faith Hill for the first time more than two decades ago.

While promoting their first-ever joint album, McGraw and Hill stopped by to chat on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night (Nov. 16). The pair talked about the secrets to their relationship after being married for 21 years, and McGraw revealed that he’s been madly in love with Hill since the day he saw her at a radio conference all those years ago.

“We met in 1994. The first time we met was in 1994 at CRS, which is Country Radio Seminar. I remember very vividly. It was a New Faces show, and we were backstage and we all took a picture. A lot of new artists—Clay Walker was in there, a few other artists—and that was the first time I met Faith. I had a mullet and the ugliest red jacket you’ve ever seen in your life I had on. And I looked at her and was smitten right away,” McGraw remembered.

Laughing at how impressive his memory was about the moment in time, Hill joked that she definitely did not reciprocate the same feelings overnight but eventually fell for him when they went on tour together shortly after.

Speaking of memories, McGraw even spilled on meeting one of his daughter’s boyfriends for the first time, in which the country singer just so happened to be holding a knife and wearing a bloodied apron during the greeting. McGraw reassured, though, that his outfit was for good reason as he was grilling up some meaty barbeque for the family to feast on later that day.

The pair played a game with Fallon and some members from his house band called “Search Party,” where each team had to fill in the blank with the top answers to finish out ridiculous questions like, “Why do country singers always sing about…,” and “Why do dogs…?” In the end, McGraw and Co. came out victorious after the Family Feud-style competition.

McGraw and Hill’s album, The Rest of Our Life, is available now.
