Tim McGraw is being honored for his support of military and veteran caregivers. This month, he’ll be presented with the Tom Hanks Caregiver Champion Award by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation.

Joining an A-list of previous honorees, McGraw will be recognized for his steadfast support of those who care for the nation’s heroes, at home and out of the spotlight. Whether the injuries they’ve sustained are visible or not, many military vets need the around-the-clock compassion of their loved ones, which includes roughly 5.5 million selfless people nationwide. McGraw knows what it takes to be one of those caregivers, having done so for his father Tug McGraw, who died of brain cancer in 2004.

The country superstar serves as the Honorary Chair of the Tug McGraw Foundation, which is dedicated to enhancing the lives of those with brain conditions, and has helped many veterans and their caregivers through their programs. The Tug McGraw Foundation is a partner of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, and McGraw now joins previous recipients Tom Hanks — the Hollywood star and Hidden Heroes Campaign Co-chair who the award is named for –and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

“We are thrilled to honor Tim McGraw this year,” says Steve Schwab, CEO of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. “He understands from both his personal experiences, and his support of other caregivers, exactly what our military and veteran caregivers go through on a daily basis. Inspired by what he learned from caring for his father, Tim has used his platform as one of our nation’s top entertainers to help the military community find resources for invisible injuries. This continues to be a critical need for caregivers, and an important component of our work at the Elizabeth Dole Foundation.”

Tim McGraw will be honored during the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s third annual Heroes and History Makers event on October 20 at 8 p.m. ET. The virtual event will be hosted by Senators Elizabeth and Bob Dole, and will also feature appearances by Hanks and the Today show’s Savannah Guthrie, plus narration of caregiver stories by Adam Driver, Darius Rucker, Hilary Swank, Jocko Sims, Nico Santos and more.
