It was the final night in the Knockout round on season 17 of NBC’s The Voice, and all four coaches — Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani — had pairings facing off. This was also the last night that the coaches and competitors could utilize the help of “Mega Mentor” Taylor Swift.
Blake was the only coach with a steal remaining. During the previous night’s competition, he mentioned that he was saving his steal for something really special, but as the competition began, he said he wasn’t sure what he was going to do with his steal. He ran it up to the final Knockout of the season.
TEAM LEGEND
MARYBETH BYRD (18) – “All I Ask” by Adele
JOHN: “Adele is always going to be big shoes to fill. She’s one of the best vocalists in popular music, but I think Marybeth can do it.”
VS
PRESTON C. HOWELL (15) – “The Way You Look Tonight” by Fred Astaire
TAYLOR: “It’s cool to see someone Preston’s age really love songs that have defined generations that came before him because those are the songs that built every song that came after them.”
Feedback
JOHN: “I just love both of you. I think you both stepped up to the plate. Preston, this was my favorite performance of yours. The way you winked at the audience, flirted with the audience, it was smooth, man, you killed it. And Marybeth, you are just an exceptionally gifted vocalist. Your tone is really lovely to listen to. This is a really difficult decision.”
Winner: MARYBETH
TEAM BLAKE
RICKY BRADDY (36) – “So High” by John Legend
TAYLOR: “This song really gave him the ability to show us what he can do vocally. I mean, it was phenomenal. But I didn’t want him to distract from that, so sometimes it’s really just asking them to simplify what they’re doing.”
VS
ZACH BRIDGES (29) – “The Dance” by Garth Brooks
BLAKE: “Zach is going to be singing, literally, one of the most famous country songs of all time and everybody is going to notice every little thing that the does because we all know the melody.”
Feedback
BLAKE: “My decision is going to be based on who I feel like swung for the fence. You did a Garth Brooks song. It’s classic. You don’t do that. It takes a lot of nerve. And Ricky, you did a John Legend song in front of John Legend. Who do you think you are? Talk about swinging for the fence. Both of you guys really laid it out there and I respect that.”
Winner: RICKY
TEAM GWEN
CALVIN LOCKETT (25) – “You’ll Be in My Heart” by Phil Collins
(Rehearsal not shown)
VS
MYRACLE HOLLOWAY (44) – “Can We Talk” by Tevin Campbell
GWEN: “It would be cool to see you a little more animated.”
Feedback
GWEN: “Myracle, I thought you did such a great job, you were so sassy and so entertaining. I just think you’re a special person.”
Winner: MYRACLE
TEAM KELLY
DAMALI (16) – “Sober” by Demi Lovato
KELLY: “I love that Damali picked a song that means something to her. You can definitely feel there is familiarity with that message.”
VS
GRACEE SHRIVER (16) – “Leave the Pieces” by The Wreckers
TAYLOR: “Gracee’s tall and blonde, and had red lipstick on, and a guitar, and a dress, and cowboy boots, and I was like, ‘I see you’ and I feel that. I relate to you on a deep level.’”
Feedback
KELLY: “You’re both really good. Damali, you have this Annie Lennox thing for me. And Gracee, gah! You’re so original! You were both fantastic. It’s like a young Mariah and a young Dixie Chicks. Both things I grew up on and love. This is a really, really hard one for me.”
Winner: DAMALI
STEAL: Blake – “I had my eye on Gracee since the Blind Auditions. You can definitely hear Dolly in there, you can hear some Patty Loveless, but it’s also mainstream country at the same time.”
