Carrie Underwood is no stranger to winning music’s biggest awards, but her eighth Grammy represents something different. Taking home the golden gramophone trophy on Sunday night (April 3) for Best Roots Gospel Album, Underwood was rewarded for taking a risk and putting her faith front and center on My Savior, and releasing a true passion project.

Arriving right at the height of her country recording career, Underwood essentially put everything on hold for My Savior (and its companion Christmas album, My Gift), choosing to cross a few things off her bucket list. And speaking with reporters after the Grammy win, she tearfully explained why the spiritual album’s recognition means so much.

“Im probably going to immediately start crying,” she said, fighting back the tears of joy. “I feel like it’s more important because I feel like this is one of the most important bodies of work I’ve ever been a part of, or been able to do. This is one thing I’ve wanted to do literally my whole career. I’ve wanted to make this album, and I got to, and this just means the world to me.

“Man, I didn’t last any length of time, did I?” she said with a laugh.

Underwood shared a smiliar message directly with fans on social media, sending up “Glory to God” and reiterating her belief that My Savior is “the most important album I’ve ever made.” Fans have long appreciated Underwood’s faith, which has been a part of her career since her American Idol days and even with her breakout single, “Jesus, Take the Wheel.”

Elsewhere on the emotional night, the superstar also got to perform her new single “Ghost Story” for the first time, and admitted that despite all her TV experience, those performances often leave her spooked.

“It was nerve racking,” she said of the single’s performance debut. “I feel like in my live show if I mess up, I have like two hours to make up for it, but whenever you’re doing live television it’s like you get one shot to just give it your all and do your best, so I get really nervous. And then you add all the other artists and musicians that I look up to sitting there in the audience watching me, it just adds on to the nerves. But it was exciting and I’m glad we have new music.”
