Review: Levi Hummon EP

Levi Hummon has quite an impressive pedigree. His father, Marcus, is one of Nashville’s most respected tunesmiths, having written such hits as “Bless The Broken Road” and “Cowboy Take Me Away.” Needless to say, the songwriting apple didn’t fall too far from the tree, as the younger Hummon has already enjoyed some songwriting success in his young career. His “Red, White, and You” was recently cut by Steven Tyler, and he has written with such major players as Liz Rose, Shane McAnally, and Nashville Songwriters’ Hall of Fame member Tom Douglas.

Having just signed with The Valory Music Co., Hummon’s debut EP shows much promise of a talent definitely on the rise. “Life’s For Livin,” which kicks off the project has a sing-a-long flair and a carefree vibe that should definitely appeal to the younger demo. The same could be said for the rollicking “Window Down Days.”

But, there’s more than just radio-ready hooks and pop-ish grooves to Hummon. “Chain Reaction” has a dramatic sound that he really seems to sink his teeth into as a vocalist, and “Love You, Hate You, Miss You” manages to be both appealing to today’s sounds, but also a solid piece of sonic ear candy. Without a doubt, it has the strongest potential for success here, in my opinion. However, that still isn’t the jewel of the EP. “Guts and Glory,” which Hummon co-wrote with Douglas and Travis Hill, is a first-rate composition that deserves a chance to be heard. Its message of various people who have risen to life’s challenges and climbed the mountain is quite inspiring.

I wish the EP had a couple of more tracks to it, just to try to further figure Hummon out in terms of direction, but overall, I like what he’s done here. I think he’s definitely living up to the advance praise that many publications have shown his way. He’s one to watch!
