Gaskin, who wrote “Mr. Bartender” in 2005, recently told CountryMusicIsLove the story of how the tune came about…
“I had come in from hanging sheet rock with my dad, he says. “[We] walked in the house, and my grandmother lived just through the yard, and [my dad] said, ‘Bradley, do you wanna go see your grandmother today?’ I said, ‘well, I'll go see her after a while. I'm gonna sit right here and strum this guitar and write me a country song.'”
“My dad kinda looked at me like I was crazy and walked out of the house. I sat down and strummed the guitar and the opening line was Mr. Bartender.”
Gaskin says he wanted to write a traditional country song…and that’s exactly what he did.
“I wanted to write something that I missed hearing on the radio or I wanted to write something that I grew up with listening to as a kid,” he tells us. “I was able to write that song very quickly. My dad was gone for about 20 minutes and when he came back in I played it for him and I said, ‘Dad what do you think?’ And he said, ‘did George Jones or Merle Haggard do that song- which one of those guys?’
“I knew by that reaction that I probably wrote exactly what I set out to do,” Gaskin recalls.
