Casey James Talks New Music, Fans and Life After ‘American Idol’

Fans were first introduced to country music newcomer Casey James on season nine of “American Idol” where the Texas native placed third on the show. His debut single, “Let’s Don’t Call It A Night,” is at country radio and at all digital retailers.

CountryMusicIsLove recently spoke with Casey about life since “Idol,” his new music, his fans, and more. See what he had to say below…

What have you been up to since American Idol?
Mainly just been still playing music. I got to open up for Sugarland for quite a few dates and really just out there playing the music, making an album, and doing what I do.

How would you describe “Let’s Don’t Call It A Night” to someone who hasn’t heard it yet?
I would say it’s got a good groove and it is a sexy song. It’s a lighthearted take on wanting things to continue, just having a great night, and not wanting that to end.

Was is written after a personal experience?
I would love to say that its about a particular instance but its really – it’s about all those nights that you just want things to keep rockin’ and rollin’, you know, just if you’re having a great time and you don’t want it to end. That’s what this song is about. I think we’ve all been there. I got into a room with Terry McBride and Brice Long and we just popped it out. It was just one of those fun songs to write and it just kind of came out us.

Can fans look expect a “Let’s Don’t Call It A Night” music video?
Yes, there will definitely be one.

Have you been doing a lot of songwriting for your album?
I’ve done all of it so far with co-writing with a lot of great writers here in town. Yea, I’m writing as much as possible. I’m writing everyday. Anytime something comes to me I’m writing. The great thing about being here, I moved from Fort Worth, Texas to Nashville, Tennessee for a lot of reasons and one of them being that there’s a ton of great resources in town amazing songwriters and musicians and things to up my game and people that I can get with and learn from.

When can fans get their hands on your debut album?
I’m thinking the beginning of the year. Next year.

While you were on “American Idol,” you shared the story of your devastating motorcycle accident. At first, they didn’t expect you to survive. How has the accident changed your life?
It’s affected me as a person in every way. I think anybody that’s been in that situation would tell you the same thing I think it does something different to each person. To me, it really just opened my eyes up to the fact that I was taking a lot of things for granted and you never know when could be the last time you say goodbye to somebody, or the last time that you play guitar, or sing. All those things being forefront in my mind now, I really appreciate everything that I’ve got and the time that I have and it really makes me want to, I guess, just to make sure that if my time was ended, if everything was said and done, what would people say about me? Did I leave a good mark on the world? Was I a good influence? Did I do things the right way? Did I treat people the way that I want to be treated? All those things are important to me now and I guess it’s all just crystal clear, where it used to not be so important.

Your fans seem to be extremely supportive and passionate. Tell us about your relationship with them.
Since the show I’ve had just an amazing group of people that have been extremely supportive and they’ve come out to all my shows and I can’t say enough good things about them. I guarantee if it continues down that line I’ll just be blown away.
