Danny Gokey Knows His ‘Best Days’ Are Ahead Of Him

Danny Gokey has learned a lot since the release of his debut country album My Best Days. The American Idol alum, who is nominated for New/Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the upcoming American Country Awards, says he learns something new about his music, his audience, or the music business in general each and every day.

“Man, I tell you what I feel — like a student back at school,” Gokey tells the Montreal Gazette. “I definitely know now what works and what doesn’t. Each time, I learn more.”

When it came to recording the first record, he says he left a lot in the hands of the songwriters.

“I had to trust the songwriters,” recalls Danny. “We had to find songs that were me. I think we did. I think that first album defined me. I feel like I’ve evolved more since.”

“One of the biggest compliments I get is that people see the huge growth since American Idol,” he continues. “I’ll tell you one thing: I’m not a cookie-cutter artist. I love doing country music, but I don’t have a country voice.”

So what can fans expect from Gokey’s sophomore album?

“I don’t want to be a bubble-gum guy with every song, but I believe a positive outlook can change people,” he says. “I’ll always push that.”
