Danny Gokey To Help Unveil World’s Largest T-Shirt At CMA Music Festival

The Guinness World Record for Largest T-Shirt will be broken by Gildan Activewear on Saturday, June 11, 2011, during the 2011 CMA Music Festival in Nashville, TN. The record-breaking shirt will be unveiled with the help of Danny Gokey.

The T-shirt – nearly the size of a football field – measures approximately 170 feet wide and 262 feet long, weighs nearly three tons, and took six weeks to make. It is so large it will be used to create 12,000 shirts, which Gildan will donate to Keep the Music Playing (KTMP), a charity initiative that supports music education in Metro Nashville Public Schools.

“We’re excited to not only break the Guinness World Record but also, more importantly, to align with Keep the Music Playing through our donation. Music education is so important to today’s youth and we’re thrilled to support the cause,” says Randy Brown, vice president retail sales, Gildan.

Gildan produced the T-shirt fabric at their state-of-the-art textile facility, with yarn from spinning plants in North Carolina. Final construction took place in Utah over four weeks, using sewing machines on a large track that sewed the rolls of fabric into larger panels for assembly. The record-breaking shirt, which is the same proportions as a regular size, large shirt, was then set onto a flatbed trailer to make the 1,700 mile trip to Nashville. It will be rolled out at Centennial Park beginning at 11:30 AM by more than 100 volunteers with a Guinness representative on hand to oversee the unveiling.

“Gildan will be attempting to break the World’s Largest T-Shirt record, which has been set and broken five times since the first attempt in 1991. The T-shirt will be measured from shoulder to hem vertically and armpit to armpit horizontally,” Guinness surveyor Morgan Wilber notes.

The unveiling, which will be coordinated by Energy X Productions, will serve as a kick-off to Musician’s Corner, a weekly outdoor concert series that will feature performances by Love & Theft and James Otto beginning at 3:00 PM. Gildan will be presented with the Guinness World Record certificate at the LP Field stage later that evening during the CMA Music Festival’s Nightly Concert at LP Field.
