Despite suffering from a broken foot, Jimmy Wayne crossed the finish line of his seven month, 1,700 mile Meet Me Halfway walk on Sunday. Wayne’s MMH walk began on January 1st in Nashville and ended on Sunday, August 1 in Phoenix, AZ.

According to ABC.com, dozens of fans and a high school marching band walked the final stretch with Jimmy.

“I really can’t believe I did it,” he told AOL’s The Boot, as he stood beneath the ‘Welcome to Phoenix’ street sign. “I just finished my walk! It’s really going to take sometime to filter what happened. It’s almost surreal. It’s been seven months … I’ve raised the bar so high, chances are I will never be able to match that. That was seven months of walking across America. It’s pretty emotional.”

The goal of the Meet Me Halfway campaign is to raise awareness of children in the foster care system who are at risk of out-aging the system and being left with no where to go.

“I hope what people realize and remember is not what I did, but what I did it for,” Wayne tells People. “I get a lot of, ‘I can’t believe you walked across America!’ Or ‘I can’t believe you walked the last five miles with a broken foot!’ But what I should be hearing is, ‘I can’t believe there are homeless kids in this country!’

“So this walk was so important,” Wayne says. “I knew I had to do it.”
