Country star Brett Young cast his wife Taylor Mills in the new video for his single, “You Didn’t,” but it doesn’t show the love birds they are in real life. Instead, Young plays guy in emotional free fall, and Taylor is the girl who got away.

Described by Young as a “painful journey of unrequited love,” the clip puts an interesting spin on his latest single, which finds a couple coming apart at the seams. In the song, Young croons about falling in love with someone who just “didn’t,” and relucanlty lets his significant other go. But the video shows what’s happening under the surface.

Despite his cool and collected exterior, Young’s character is truly suffering on the inside. Sporting a thick beard, he tries to drink his feelings away but can’t shake visions of what’s been lost, and even goes so far as changing his appearance in a fit of grief. The video was directed by Seth Kupersmith (who also directed the videos for “Mercy,” “Catch, “Lady” and “Not Yet), and both spoke about the little details put into their clip in an online Q&A.

“The cool thing about this video is that it lets you in on how the narrator is actually feeling, as opposed to how he’s presented in the song,” Young shared. “He is saying all the right things so his girl doesn’t feel guilty, but then the video sheds light on how much of that is a lie, and how deeply he’s actually struggling. As always, Seth delivered beyond my wildest expectations and it’s never a bad day when you get to work alongside your beautiful wife!”

Young and Mills were married in 2018, and many of Young’s early hits were inspired by a time when they were apart before his career took off. Together, the couple have two daughters — 2 year old Presley and 8-month-old Rowan — and Young even published a children’s book called Love You, Little Lady.

“You Didn’t” is part of the California native’s Weekends Look a Little Different These Days album, and is currently spinning at country radio. Young will soon perform at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo (February 24) before returning to the U.K. for C2C 2022 on March 12 and 13.
