Maren Morris has dropped a two-for-one blast of new tunes, gifting fans a pair of slinky, strutting GIRL-power standouts.

“Just for Now” and “Takes Two” were originally written years ago, the Grammy winner notes, but they weren’t included on the release of her 2019 album, GIRL. But after having a baby boy (Hayes) in March and then being forced off the road through the COVID-19 pandemic, she’s had plenty of time to give them another look.

GIRL has been out over a year & has been one of the most transformative periods of my life,” Morris writes on Instagram. “During this time off the road, I had the opportunity to polish up 2 older songs of mine that I couldn’t wait for you to hear.”

First up is “Just for Now,” a jam built on live-for-the-moment romance and letting the rest of the world fade away — something we could all relate to dreaming about now. Notably, it features a vocal feel that’s reminiscent of “How It’s Done” from her breakthrough album debut, Hero, and melancholy, sleek instrumentation. That makes sense, since it was recorded during the Hero studio sessions, and co-written with her husband Ryan Hurd and longtime collaborator busbee, who tragically passed away last year.

Meanwhile, “Takes Two,” takes a sensual R&B vibe and matches to passionate lyrics, all about a love that’s greater — and more volatile — than the sum of its parts. Both tracks are now part of the broader GIRL album, tacked on to the end as its new fifteenth and sixteenth tracks. “Takes Two” comes from the original GIRL recording sessions and was co-written by Morris with Sarah Aarons and Greg Kurstin, the same team that penned “Girl.”

Morris released her Gold certified GIRL album in the Spring of 2019, and it debuted at the top of Billboard’s Country Albums chart (as well as Number Four on the all-genre Billboard 200). It’s currently nominated for Album of the Year at the upcoming 2020 ACM Awards, which are set for September 16.
