Sam Hunt tells an ex-convict’s tale of regret in the gritty new video for “Breaking Up Was Easy In The 90s.”
Directed by Justin Clough, the movie-like clip follows a guy who’s just getting out of prison … and realizing that putting the past behind him won’t happen overnight. Just like the heavy-hearted song it brings to life, he’s not behind bars physically but still feels imprisoned by love lost, and struggles with what to do with his second chance — all while Hunt narrates the edgy plot.
“I’m sick of sittin’ at the house, dyin’ on my phone/ Wishin’ I was somewhere I can be alone / Try to let you go but somethin’ always reminds me / I bet breakin’ up was easy in the ’90s / I’m tired of gettin’ drunk, tired of bein’ free / Tired of seein’ pictures I don’t wanna see / Girl you’re everywhere, everywhere but behind me / I bet breakin’ up was easy in the ’90s,” goes the anguished chorus.
With hip-hop influenced vocals matching Hunt’s banjo-and-beats sound, “Breaking Up Was Easy In The 90s” was co-written by Sam Hunt, Chris La Corte, Zach Crowell, Ernest K. Smith and Josh Osborne. It appears on his second album, Southside, and follows back-to-back No. 1 hits — “Hard To Forget” and “Kinfolks” — as Hunt continues his 2020 comeback from a highly publicized career “pause.”
Hunt recently performed “Hard to Forget” at the 2020 CMT Music Awards, and also appeared on the virtual iHeartRadio Music Festival. “Breaking Up Was Easy in the 90s” was released to radio in October, and is currently just outside the Top 30 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart.
