Thomas Rhett captured the feeling of a heart ready to explode at the 57th annual ACM Awards, delivering his current single, “Slow Down Summer.”

Marking one of the first-ever live performances of the track, TR started his song off with a quiet moment of reflection, seated at a grand piano high up in Allegiant Stadium. But soon, the song began to swell with passion — and so did the performance.

Rising from his seat while a string section brought the drama, the track was soon an epic power ballad with Thomas Rhett howling at the moon. All about trying to make a perfect romantic moment last a little longer, the track came to a climax with fireworks going off outside the stadium — mirroring the feeling inside his heart.

Co-written by TR with Ashley Gorley, Sean Douglas, Jesse Frasure and Rhett Akins, “Slow Down Summer” is the first single from TR’s upcoming sixth studio album, Where We Started, which will arrive on April 1. It was released in November of 2021, and Thomas Rhett followed up on Friday with the thoughtful ballad “Death Row” (feat. Tyler Hubbard and Russell Dickerson).

Elsewhere on the night, the two-time nominee was slated to perform “Praise the Lord” with BRELAND, and TR was recently revealed as the star of the first Fritos TV commercial in 20 years. Find out more about his acting debut here.

Marking the first time a major country awards show aired exclusively as a live stream, the 57th annual ACM Awards took place on Monday (March 7) at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium. Co-hosted by Dolly Parton with Jimmie Allen and Gabby Barrett, the show featured more than 20 performances and was carried by Amazon Prime Video.
