Come March 2019 fans will soon hear those four immortal words: “This is American Idol.” That’s because ABC will bring back the reality competition series for a second season beginning March 3.
The major network announced its spring 2019 lineup, which features the revival of the show that strives to find America’s best new musical talent. Returning to the crew will be Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Katy Perry as judges with Ryan Seacrest at the helm as host. Radio personality and recent Dancing with the Stars winner Bobby Bones will lend his knowledge as the show’s full-time mentor after appearing part time in season one.
The tight-knit group has been hard at work, already filming the Hollywood Week episodes.
Bringing American Idol back to the small screen was an east decision for ABC, who bought rights to the program after FOX ended it in 2016 after 15 seasons. Before the first iteration of the revival was completed, the network decided to renew for a second season with the same cast.
“We knew that American Idol on ABC would unleash an opportunity for singers from all walks of life to realize their dreams and that these incredible contestants would have America rooting for their success,” said Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment, at the time (quote via Deadline). “I am thrilled that Katy, Luke, Lionel and Ryan will be back to once again embark on this Idol journey with us to discover the next crop of inspiring talent.”
Catch American Idol when it returns to ABC on Sunday, March 3 at 8 p.m. EST.
