There’s nothing like a round of golf with friends to melt the stresses of life away. Well, that is, unless your buddies put a fake snake in the vicinity without warning!

Darius Rucker is recovering from one of those moments after his “Summer Plays On” tour mate Charles Kelley (of Lady Antebellum) decided to give him a serious scare while on the course.

“Playing golf with @dariusrucker at #whisperrock in Phoenix and we pranked him with this fake snake! @jfujigolf for the win! 😂,” wrote Kelley with a video posted to Instagram.

In the short clip, Rucker is seen putting away a club on the back of his golf cart as Kelley secretly records him. It’s when he takes a step to the side of the vehicle that he catches glimpse of a coiled snake and runs away. After realizing the snake is, in fact, fake, Rucker erupts into laughter–and a few choice words for Kelley.

Lovingly poking fun at one another has long been a part of Kelley and Rucker’s friendship, and the two have spent many hours together out on the links, constantly playing to see who’s the better golfer.

“I want to play good, I do,” Kelley told Sounds Like Nashville during the 2018 ACM Lifting Lives Topgolf Tee-Off. “I definitely just want to beat Darius. He and I are best buddies, and when it comes to golf, that’s where we definitely have the competitive side that comes out in us. So as long as I can take him down, I’m happy.”

The two have also hit the studio together, most recently on Rucker’s cover of “Straight to Hell,” which also features Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean. It was per the request of Kelley that Darius record the Drivin N’ Cryin hit.

“I get a phone call from Charles Kelley out of the blue. But I’d been meaning to cut ‘Straight to Hell’ for every record I’ve put out. Every record I go, ‘I’m going to cut “Straight to Hell,”’ but I just never do. And Charles Kelley calls me out of the blue and goes, ‘Hey man, I was just listening to that “Straight to Hell” song, you should cut it and I should sing along to it.’ I took that as the universe saying, ‘Dude cut the song,’” Rucker says.

Kelley, along with Lady Antebellum, and Rucker can currently be seen on their “Summer Plays On” tour.
