Country superstar Tim McGraw took to Nashville’s favorite Bluebird Cafe to perform his emotional single “I Called Mama” on the ACM Awards.

I sung it for the blue sky / And a couple live oak trees / I thought of home, grabbed my phone from my pocket / And I called mama,” McGraw crooned in the song’s heart-rending chorus, while rocking a black top, jeans and his signature black cowboy hat. The relatively stripped down performance was accompanied by only a steel guitar and acoustic guitar, which irrefutably enhanced the singer’s poignant delivery.

“I Called Mama” is featured on McGraw’s latest album, Here On Earth, which dropped last month. The 16-track record also includes the songs “Good Taste In Women,” “Hallelujahville” and wistful album closer, “Doggone.”

The 55th Academy of Country Music Awards, hosted by Keith Urban, are live from Nashville tonight (9/16) on CBS at 8/7c.
