Country star Brett Young was once a promising baseball player — even getting drafted by an MLB team out of high school. But the hit maker left that life behind long ago, and after recently notching his seventh Number One in a row, the decision seems sound.
Still, he can’t help thinking of what might have been — and in honor of the 2021 season’s opening day, he got a little help Audacy’s Kelly Ford. Speaking with the host about his love of the diamond, Ford asked Young to come up with a dream team — a baseball squad made up entirely of country stars — and he did not disappoint.
Featuring everybody from Carrie Underwood (Right Field) to Scotty McCreery (Shortstop), the roster looks like it could compete for hits on the field and off. Here’s Young’s opening day lineup, going old school with himself at manager/pitcher, and a little bit of the rationale behind it.
Catcher – Chris Lane
1B – Chase Rice
2B – Kelsea Ballerini
SS – Scotty McCreery
3B – Ashley McBryde
CF – Shay Mooney
RF – Carrie Underwood
LF – Michael Hobby
Pinch Hitter – Chris Young
Ball Boy – Charles Kelly
Coming in at the infield’s most athletic position, Young says McCreery “beat me at ping pong last year so he must be a great athlete.”
With Dan + Shay vocalist Shay Mooney in centerfield, Young says “centerfield has to cover a lot of ground and when I look at Shay I think he’s like a little Speedy Gonzales, so I want him out there. He’s little and he must be really fast.”
And as for the most embrassing position on the field? “You know who I’ll make ball boy? Charles Kelley, ’cause after I beat him at ping pong in the same tournament he crawled on top of me on the ping pong table,” Young jokes.
